Shortly after fall break, first-year optometry students Alyssa S. and Kaitlyn C. approached Dr. Angel Novel Simmons, OD ’03, with a simple but powerful question: How can we give back to the UMSL community? Ideas quickly began to flow—everything from a winter coat drive to supporting a local school family. After thoughtful discussion, they landed on an idea that combined impact with excitement: a food drive—with a competitive twist.
Donation boxes appeared outside the preclinic space, flyers popped up throughout the College, and friendly rivalries sparked as each cohort began strategizing for the win.

As the final days approached, the donation boxes overflowed and the energy ramped up. By the end of the drive, College of Optometry students had donated over 500 cans and personal items to the Triton Pantry, a campus resource supporting UMSL faculty, staff, and students. And the first-year class took home the win!
Our students’ commitment to UMSL is truly inspiring. Their generosity and compassion remind us that while optometry school is demanding, no one should have to face food insecurity. We are deeply grateful for their hearts, their leadership, and their dedication to caring for others—both inside and beyond the clinic.
