The Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes program occurred in Terre Haute on June 8th. It was coordinated by Dr. Katie Connelly, Chief of the Pediatrics and Binocular Vision Clinic at the Indiana University (IU) School of Optometry in collaboration with Assistant Clinical Professor Jessica Tu, OD. Dr. Tu, prior to joining the College of Optometry faculty, was the Cornea and Contact Lens resident at IU. Drs. Connelly and Tu were assisted by UMSL faculty and students including current Cornea and Contact Lens resident, Dr. Jonathan Chen, Madison Moss (’20), Rebecca Weinberger (’20), and Patrick Fiddler (’20). They performed comprehensive vision screenings that included no less than 12 testing stations. At the conclusion of the examination, Special Olympic athletes were offered a new pair of prescription glasses, sunglasses, or sport goggles. Approximately 250 patients received care that day! According to Dr. Tu, this could be the beginning of a very mutually beneficial partnership. “This collaboration allowed our faculty and students to work with an extraordinary and appreciative population, and evaluate ocular abnormalities not typically observed in everyday optometry. In addition, new friendships were made between IU and UMSL that will hopefully lead to many more future opportunities.”
